Ready to get thready?

Friday, January 01, 2010   |

Threading is an age old Indian hair removal method that involves twisting cotton thread around each and every hair so as to pull it all out with just a few quick tugs. Lately, the fine art that is threading has been making a bit of a splash in Western culture due to it's popularity with glamtastic celebs like Reese Witherspoon, Liz Hurley, Kim Kardashian and Salma Hayek.

'I know, I know... my brows are, like, totally covetable...'

To find out a bit more about it, we chatted to Sonia Potgieter of Eyecandy, a Cape Town brow and lash boutique that specializes in threading.

What are the benefits of threading?
Threading is kinder to your skin and doesn't add to the aging process as it doesn't pull or tug like other hair removal methods do. It's the most natural way of removing hair as it only uses a cotton thread that is non-invasive to the skin. (Other methods like waxing and sugaring use products and heat to remove hair). Threading also causes less redness, gives better definition and leaves the skin feeling smoother than the alternatives because the thread is twisted and rolled close to the skin. This enables it to remove the smaller hairs that waxing and tweezing leave behind. Also, threading is known to last longer than the alternatives and, if performed correctly, is less painful than other forms of hair removal.

Does it hurt?
Many of our clients find threading less painful than waxing or tweezing. The main reason for this is that it doesn't tug or pull at the skin. Eyecandy has also developed its own cream that contains aloe vera and essential oils that is massaged into the skin after treatment to help soothe, heal and nourish the skin.

How often should you get it done?
How often you get your brows done depends on how quickly your hair grows back. Once threaded, the hairs take longer to grow back than if done through waxing or tweezing, so most of our clients come back for a treatment every 3 - 4 weeks.

Can you only do your brows?
Threading is a hair removal method that can be used on any part of the body. Eyecandy specializes in facial threading only and we offer a variety of facial threading treatments including brow, lip, chin, full face and monobrow for men.

How much does it cost?
To have your brows done the Eyecandy way costs R80 which includes a full brow consultation for all our clients. Lip and chin threading will set you back R50 and a full face thread costs R175.
